My first bike... Greetengs from Serbia to all!
« kdy: Čtvrtek, 26/06/2008, 10:09 »
Hello everybody,
my name is Vlad, Im from Serbia and first would like to say thanks to the people from this site that were very helpful and friendly to me  from the begining..

On to the main subject.. :)
I recently bought 2001 cagiva Canyoon 600 with only 15000km and here it is http://www.bikepics.com/members/dovla/
It had some issues (not charging the battery) and so, but I taken care of it. The main problem is that I cant start it now, I drove it the whole day, and it started normaly whole day, but when I come home it the evening it wouldn't start and its like that since.. It happened to me once more before, and I changed the spark plug and it started normaly.. But now the spark plug is new and it still wont start.. Anyone got some ideas?  Ill take it to the workshop today or so, but I would like to know what to expect, so I don't get robbed.. A guy I know, told me It cold be bent crankshaft ("radilica" in Serb.), because, practicaly wont start when the bike is warm... and that It could be a major issue..

Also I smell gas when trying to start it, the spark plug gives a spark (i tested), I checked the killswitch, and the starter is turning normaly, I tryed to push-start, and nothing.. I have the 1996 canyon 600 workshop manual so you can refer me to it if needed..  If someone has a idea, and can't be sure how to explain in english, post a picture...

Again, I thank you all for taking the time to read this, and trying to help fellow canyon owner...

all the best from me.   8)

Hi Vlad...
Man...Sounds like you have no own CagivaClub in Serbia :) Wooow... We are slowly becoming kind of international Club...aaaawwweeesome :)
It is pleasure for us as well... As you might know, Cagiva´s motorbikes have a lot of problems with their engines. There are plenty of issues where you can got to know where is the problem in, but for your pitty almost every issue is in Czech. Our languages are maybe a little bit similar, but only in a few cases. As you said before, it´s a big problem coz someone who can talk a lot about the problems can not speak english or whatever foering language. Some of our "Older" members as I think could speak russian, so maybe they can help you. My skills are not so suitable for your problem, but what I think is, you should check the mix of petrol and air in carburation system. Sometimes that is the main problem, coz if there is too much of petrol in the mixture, the engine is not able to fire it all and the same with the opossite way othervise you can small the petrol everywhere. The head of the engine might be smelled of petrol in the first couse. Yepp...Check this first out and then pay your attention to another parts. And also Vlad, I do not know if you have a good spark. Sometimes is that happening when you chose a wrong type of the spark. Check it up as well.
Now Im gonna translate your post for my czech non-english speaking mates...

Vlad...Hope our mates will be so kind to write here something helpfull...

have a fun with your bike man...

Godzi...

Thanks man 4 your quick reply.. No there is no Cagiva club in Serbia, here folks mainly drive Jap bikes..
I thought that the problem could be the mix problem, is that the litle turnable nob under the carb.. I was trying to turn it in all directions but no change at all. maybe Im not doing it well. What did you mean by :"The head of the engine might be smelled of petrol in the first couse."

The spark plug I put in is Champion something -  9 - something, I think I should have used "7" but I couldn't find it. is this a big issue? I drove it with that spark plug the whole day. But I had the same problem when I drove it with the old one.

Vlad, verify teh state of your choke.

I was never able to start the cold Canyon with full choke, I had to have it a aout 1/2 only.

Man...if you mean the stuff which you can set the RPM up with... the engine should have something around 1500 - 1600 rpms... just turn with that around... ;)

I have had a similar problem. In my case, the problem was in inlet (sucking) valves - they was without the will. Right will is very small - 0.05. If you try this, be carefully.
Anotherone is the information from godzi and boris right.
Good luck.

So... the mechanic called me today..
It apears that the problem was the cracked rubber hose that conects the carburetor and the cylinder, so the compression level is at the minimum. and the mixture of fuel/air was wrongly set..
So now I need a new rubber hose, the mechanic is talking about getting it in Greece (!?) , but if anyone has some other sugestions Im open for any combination. If anyone knows where to buy this part or has it 4 sale Im all ears..

Hmmm...sounds right...yeah...when the rubber is punched or if there is a hole in, there can be more oxygen then is needed...But do not tell us that you can not buy that parts in Serbia??? Try it buy there man...or try to find some distributor in Italy...it not so far away from your country... ;)

Yeah well.. Cagiva part in Serbia, will be like twice the price of the part. Ill certanly try, but who knows... I dont know what to expect. There is like maybe 5-10 bikes like this in my country, I told you ppl here mainly drive Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki or Kawa, italians are not so popular, even Aprilias are rare.. And thats is for my reasons, parts are hard to find. But Ill manage.

;D nooo never angry..  maybe sad, cus my baby is sick.  :'( lol
Mechanic was like, try and sell the bike and buy something Japanese.. We need to open the engine and see what else is  causing low compression>  ring, piston, cylinder or the head.. so i gather its like 600/700 eur more.

The guy also said that the bike has at least 30.000 km... But I ask you, is that a lot 4 a bike, so much that its like> "throw it in the garbage" scenario... I reeeaaaalllllyyyy like my bike, but it would be a heartbrake if I have to worry if it will stop in the middle of nowhere. :(

man honestly...30000kms for bikes is not a lot...not at all...but depends what kind of bike you have...some people who own Canyons have more that 30000 and their bikes still work well, but on the other hand you ve gotta owners (as me for example) who droved up to 20000 and the engine was totally fucked up...finito capito benito...das end...slusch...kaput...total....dont know how to explain...simply...it realy matter on a previous owner...but cagiva´s engines are not so strong...
man...I give you an advice right? Find a big rock and a deep hole beside... throw it down and buy an another bike... Fixing Cagiva is like "Never ending strory :) " Man...take it as a hummor, but...some of that parts are very helpfull :)
